At Bombay Design Lab, we believe that art is meant to invoke emotion, yet in most settings it is viewed from a distance – preserved under the assumption that interaction with an observer will be detrimental to its original form.

The sculptural Pilastro Console is forged from a single block of high quality marble that is meticulously carved by an artisan and stands like a resolute Roman column. The concept of the historical marble statement piece has been modernized to fit a contemporary space.

The Cheesy console is coated in a glossy and matte yellow polyurethane finish. This quirky take on contemporary food art has been inspired by the satirical Banana taped to the wall by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Unfortunately, this piece is not edible.

The playful, fluid-like shape of this console is what gives it its name. The base is hand carved to resemble waves that cascade downward in a state of arrested motion on both the front and rear side and create the effect of continuous flow. As children when tasked to draw landscapes or depict scenes of nature, we often limit ourselves to rigid geometric shapes. We would often correlate mountains and hills to perfect triangles. Mountain View is an homage to the inner child in all of us.

The Comb is finished with a dual tone (matte and glossy) of the same clay-terracotta colour. It is an amalgamation of the distinctly rustic Indian aesthetic of terracotta objects and the modern sensibility of contemporary design. The exaggerated teeth of the Comb are designed to break the rigid parallel geometry that is common in most furniture pieces.

The Droid console deconstructs the most simple geometric shape – circle to create a new form. The piece is crafted using a novel technique that creates the effect of balance between two curved surfaces.

Inspired by the shape and colours of a magnet, this asymmetrical console appears to defy typical physical principals through a shifted centre of gravity – as if connected by a magnetic field. Similar to the Droid console, the curved edges of the base appear to balance without external support to further make the viewer question how this console is able to support the weight of any object.
